Frances Jean Woodside Yocom was born on December 11, 1934 in Wilmington, North Carolina. She grew up in Laurinburg, North Carolina and it was there she was convinced to go on a blind date with Deryl Yocom. At the end of that date, Deryl told Fran that he was going to marry her one day. She laughed. They were married on June 19, 1955.

Fran was an Army wife, and as such, she followed Deryl all over the country, wherever the Army needed him. In their Army life, they lived in 7 states and 2 foreign countries, Turkey and Germany. It was a good life, but, due to family problems, Deryl was honorably discharged in 1967 and they moved with their two children, Mike and Janet, to Seattle. They lived there for the remainder of the school year, and then moved to Edmonds. It was there that Fran learned that she was pregnant for the third time. Mark was born in October of 1971 and their family was complete.

As the family settled in to Edmonds, it was important to Fran that the family get involved in a church. After looking at many churches in the area, they decided that United Presbyterian Church of Edmonds, now called Edmonds Presbyterian, was the church for them. The kids went into Sunday School, and Fran found a group of women that she could relate...
