    Cecelia Marie Hyatt Tougas Smersh (1927 – 2017)

    Cecelia Marie Hyatt was born in 1927 in Wallace, Idaho.  Before her first birthday she suffered Infantile Paralysis (Polio) that paralyzed one of her legs and limited her mobility for her whole life. But though she could never run, jump or climb like most people, that never kept her from living a life that was so joyful and active that other fully-mobile people could only be amazed.  Her active life of cheerful optimism and loving engagement with everyone she met leaves a legacy of tender gratitude with all who have been touched by her.

    She came to Seattle with her family when she was five years old, growing up in St. Therese parish in the Madrona neighborhood. She attended St. Therese school and Holy Names Academy.  As a child and a teenager she underwent many surgeries to minimize the effects of the polio. She spent weeks in hospital wards at Children’s Hospital and became friends with other young patients.  She observed that what she was dealing with...
